Landscape is a favorite subject of painters. They frame views of the natural world that link people with physical space and memories. Do you remember grabbing your sketchbook and going outside to draw as a child? Or doodling some wild picture in your diary? Favorite childhood memories can include a fairytale castle, or activities such as observing ants, playing, just walking around a park, or hiking with family in the mountains, and very often children put these disparate themes together in one drawing. Every day, children bring their imaginations and creativity into play to add distinctive qualities to their lives, and while the scenes that they invent and record in drawings seem to be only backdrops, they are actually very important, as they represent what is going on inside their little heads. Likewise, when artists are faced with nature, they don’t simply represent the scenery before them, but rather, repeatedly observe, consider the scene, interpret nature, and then express what is in their minds. The resulting artworks become places of recollection, reconstruction, and spiritual wandering.
This exhibition was developed around the idea of presenting landscape paintings in the Museum collection along with specially commissioned interactive installations. Our goal was to prompt meaningful interactions between visitors and these landscape-themed artworks while exploring how artists present the most authentic reality of everyday life with landscapes on canvas. The exhibition is divided into three themes: Drawing from Nature, Artificial Environments, and Internal Landscapes, exploring art and nature as it has appeared in works produced under the concept of landscape art over different eras, as well as the unique perspectives of artists as they experience landscapes and express their understanding of nature and culture through art. The exhibition includes works in the Museum collection from various periods, and includes both historical and contemporary works, as well as various art forms, to show how different generations of artists have interpreted nature, diversity, and culture through the lens of landscape.
