(Jean Dubuffet, 1901-1985)
For me, insanity is super sanity. The normal is psychotic. Normal means lack of imagination, lack of creativity.
Art addresses itself to the mind, and not to the eyes. It has always been considered in this way by primitive peoples, and they are right. Art is a language, instrument of knowledge, instrument of communication.
Art does not lie down on the bed that is made for it; it runs away as soon as one says its name; it loves to be incognito. Its best moments are when it forgets what it is called.
Art is the most passionate orgy within man’s grasp.
Personally, I believe very much in values of savagery; I mean: instinct, passion, mood , violence, madness.
What I expect from any work of art is that it surprises me, that it violates my customary valuations of things and offers me other, unexpected ones.
Art must make you laugh a little and make you a little afraid. Anything as long as it doesn't bore.
Let us abolish the past, and all that comes with it! And let us make art as if no human being had ever made it before.
(Jackson Pollock, 1912-1956)
The modern artist, it seems to me, is working and expressing an inner world, in other words–expressing the energy, the motion and other inner forces.
It doesn't make much difference how the paint is put on as long as something has been said. Technique is just a means of arriving at a statement.
Painting is self-discovery. Every good artist paints what he is.
Abstract painting is abstract. It confronts you. There was a reviewer a while back who wrote that my pictures didn’t
have any beginning or any end. He didn’t mean it as a compliment, but it was.
When I’m painting, I’m not aware of what I’m doing. It’s
only after a get acquainted period that I see what I’ve been about. I’ve no fears about making changes for the painting has a life of its own.
On the floor I am more at ease. I feel nearer, more part of the painting, since this way I can walk around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting.
The modern artist is working with space and time, and expressing his feelings rather than illustrating.
The strangeness will wear off and I think we will discover the deeper meanings in modern art.
In response to the question “How do you know when you're finished?”, Pollock replied “How do you know when you're finished making love?”
(Diane Arbus, 1923-1971)
A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know.
I never have taken a picture I've intended. They're always better or worse.
I work from awkwardness. By that I mean I don't like to arrange things. If I stand in front of something, instead of arranging it, I arrange myself.
Love involves a peculiar unfathomable combination of understanding and misunderstanding.
You see someone on the street, and essentially what you notice about them is the flaw.
I really believe there are things nobody would see if I didn't photograph them.
Regardless of how you feel inside, always try to look like a winner. Even if you are behind, a sustained look of control and confidence can give you a mental edge that results in victory.
The world can only be grasped by action, not by contemplation. The hand is the cutting edge of the mind.
Most people go through life dreading they'll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They've already passed their test in life. They're aristocrats.
Nothing is easier than self-deceit. For what each man wishes, that he also believes to be true.
(Andy Warhol, 1928-1987)
Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art of all.
Pop art is for everyone. I don’t think art should be only for the select few.
Paintings are too hard. Machines have less problems. I’d
like to be a machine. I think everybody should be a machine.
(Jean Dubuffet, 1901-1985)
