《高等學校英語專業系列教材•實用英語文體學》的主要內容是:一、《實用英語文體學》是依據我國高等院校英語專業《英語文體學》教學大綱(1984)編寫的,可供高等(師範)院校英語專業本科高年級學生使用,也可供研究生和青年教師參考。二、本教材自1981年起就在北京師範大學英語專業高年級和研究生班使用;北京外國語學院英語研修班、中山大學、南京解放軍國際關係學院也曾全部或部分採用過這個教材。在此期間,筆者曾對教材作過四次較大的修改。三、《高等學校英語專業系列教材•實用英語文體學》的重點是當代英語非文學語言的語體分析。《高等學校英語專業系列教材•實用英語文體學》分兩個單元。第一單元第一章介紹了語體分析所必需的術語和語言分析方法。第二至第四章所歸納的語體特點可供分析時查閱,教師應根據學生實際水平擇要講解,不必拘泥。第二單元介紹了幾種常見的英語語體,使學生較系統地了解這幾種語體的典型特點,以提高對英語語體的敏感性。四、現實生活中的語言運用千變萬化,絕不是幾個簡單的語體常規“型式”所能概括的。但學生如果掌握了這些“型式”的特點,就能大致判斷出某一語篇(口語或筆語)的文體與某種語體常規的共同點或差距,可以進一步探討語言使用者如何受某語境因素(如對象、目的、場合等)的影響而遵守或違背常規。這就是對語體的敏感性的提高。因此《高等學校英語專業系列教材•實用英語文體學》重視分析練習,書後附有分析範例。學生做這種練習,可能會覺得枯燥,但是,認真做過這種練習的學生,都認為這是一種較快掌握語體特點的途徑,有助於加深理解和提高運用英語的能力。五、《高等學校英語專業系列教材•實用英語文體學》得益於國內前輩和同行的鼓勵和批評以及學生的反饋。英國蘭開斯特大學語言學和現代英語系主任肖特(MichaelH.Short)先生也曾閱過部分初稿。《高等學校英語專業系列教材•實用英語文體學》由北京大學胡壯麟教授主審。北京大學、北京外國語學院、對外經濟貿易大學、南京大學、中山大學、華中師範大學等院校的同行參加了審稿會。
