Bologna Annual 1998 Fiction

Each year the international children's book industry gathers in Bologna, Italy. There illustrators from around the world submit their best work for scrutiny by the judges of the Annual Illustrators' Exhibition, the centerpiece of the Bologna International Children's Book Fair. The judges look at thousands of submissions, poring over the work of more than 1,400 artists from North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Amid the acres of original paintings and drawings are the pictures that will eventually be featured in the ""Bologna Annuals, page after page of the most daring, illuminating, and beautiful art created for children's books each year. The work of both renowned artists and newcomers, the illustrations are marvelously diverse; some funny and touching, others scary or dream-like. As in childhood, one is quickly swept up in the world of wonder and story.
