If you asked me to name a few famous child stars off the top of my head, I’d probably mention Macaulay Culkin, who starred in Home Alone; Haley Joel Osment, who acted alongside Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense; and Lindsay Lohan, who is best remembered for playing twins in The Parent Trap.
You might be wondering, “How are they doing now?” When I read a recent post by Justin Bieber, who of course has become a pop superstar, I had the exact same question— “How is he doing now?” In Bieber’s lengthy post, he brought up his rise to fame and how it took a huge toll on his life. And it seems that many of these young celebrities didn’t handle the spotlight very well.
Macaulay Culkin was one of the most adored child actors in the 90s. As the cute kid in Home Alone and Home Alone 2, Culkin won the hearts of millions. He left show biz in 1994, a move he recalls as one of the best decisions he’s ever made. After making 15 movies in seven years, all he wanted was a normal life. In a recent interview, he opened up about his abusive relationship with his father. “He was a bad man. He was abusive. Physically and mentally. I can show you my scars,” said Culkin.
In countless cases of child stars gone bad, parental issues stand out as a key factor. Children, whose minds are still developing, are vulnerable to negative effects from as the temptations of money, popularity, romantic relationships, etc. And so it lies in the hands of parents, who are supposed to be more mature, to keep their children on the right track.
However, to put things in perspective, maturity and wisdom don’t necessarily grow with age. You could be in your forties but still act like a kindergartener. Wisdom is something we all need to intentionally work on in order to achieve. We need to be mentally and spiritually fit to deal with the many things we encounter in life, even the good ones. To make an analogy: give a Lamborghini to a skilled adult driver and he’ll ride like the wind; give it to a 10-year-old kid and he’ll crash and burn.
