Creating a refreshing blend of realities, author Daniel Chuang evinces a keen sense of imagination in Game Terror, his second novel. In Craven's Arcade, the players and the arcade's eponymous owner are no less fictional--or no less real--than Monty the Magnificent, the magician hero of a video game, and his companions. What starts off as a Halloween party turns into more tricks than treats, and the reader is slowly enmeshed in the story. Game Terror just might be the perfect book for gamers.

Chapter 1
Craven’s Arcade was the most well-known arcade in the United States. The games in the arcade were what made the arcade so well-known. It had every game a kid could ask for. They included Cookie Maze, Turtle Rush, Bug Hunt and Bear Tale.
However, there was one game in the arcade that was the most popular by far. In fact, every time kids came to the arcade, they would always line up to play that game. And what was this game, you may ask? Well, here it is.
The game was called Monty the Magnificent. You may be wondering what this game was about. It was a game involving a magic show. The main character of this game was Monty the Magnificent, who was a magician, and he loved the attention he received from the players. He also loved to perform the magic tricks that were written into his programming.
Meanwhile, you may also be wondering why Monty’s game was so great. His game brought entertainment to the arcade players and the graphics were very good. It had also lasted for more than 10 years, and had been in Craven’s Arcade since the 1980’s. However, even though life was good for Monty in the arcade, he held a grudge against Mr. Craven, the owner of the arcade. And the reason for his grudge was that whenever a game in the arcade malfunctioned, Mr. Craven didn’t bother to have it fixed. Instead, he immediately removed the game from the arcade. Because of Mr. Craven, Monty had lost a large number of his friends from past games. They were unable to leave the games when Mr. Craven turned their machines off. Now, despite being the most well-known arcade in the United States, by the events of this book there were only fifteen arcade games left, with Monty’s game among the fifteen.
Monty decided not to think about Mr. Craven too much right now as Halloween was approaching. Monty loved Halloween. This was because he was allowed to go to other games and receive prizes from them. Most of all, he enjoyed scaring other video game characters, including his closest buddies from the aforementioned games: Zeke the bear (Bear Tale), Specs the turtle (Turtle Rush), Finnick the gingerbread man (Cookie Maze), and Bugsy the caterpillar (Bug Hunt).
This year, in a break with tradition, Monty decided to host a Halloween party for his friends.
He traveled through the power cable (which acts as a travel tube) to a small secret room behind one of the walls in the arcade. The secret room was a club room where he held announcements for his video game friends. It is only accessible to video game characters. After reaching the club room, he pressed the announcement button, sending a message to the video game characters who were his closest friends. A few moments later, Monty’s friends piled into the clubroom.
“Hey, guys. Thank you all for coming to this meeting. Well, I’m here to announce something surprising. What day is tomorrow?” Monty asked his friends.
“Your birthday?” Bugsy asked.
“Close, but not quite yet. Guess again,” Monty replied.
“The day when we get to have a disco party?” Finnick asked sarcastically. He then did a break-dance on the spot, ending with a split. Several characters applauded.
“You’re going way off topic, Finnick. Now, one more guess, then I’ll tell you all,” Monty promised.
“Can you just tell us?” Specs said impatiently.
“Ok, I’ll tell you. Tomorrow is Halloween!” Monty exclaimed.
As soon as he said those words, everyone in the clubroom cheered with excitement.
“That means there must be new treats!” Finnick exclaimed excitedly.
“Well, I was thinking about doing something a little more different than just trick-or-treating this year,” Monty explained.
Several video game characters gasped. Others remained silent.
“Hey, I’m not saying that nothing good is going to happen. Here is what I am thinking: I am going to host a Halloween party in my game and you are all invited. How’s that?”
At first, the clubroom was silent. Then the room was filled with chattering and questions.
“What’s the theme of the party? What music will there be? Will there be any snacks? What kind of snacks?”
Monty reached into his magician top hat and pulled out a bell. He rang it loudly, calming everyone down.
“Alright, everyone. As I was saying, the party will take place in my game in the magician mansion. Everyone in this room can come anytime. The Halloween party starts at 9:30, exactly half an hour after the arcade closes. Now, any questions about the party?”
The clubroom was quiet again, except for Zeke, who raised his paw.
“Yes, Zeke?” Monty asked.
“Will the party be incredibly scary?” Zeke asked nervously.
“You’ll have to come and find out for yourself,” Monty replied.
Zeke nodded nervously.
“Well, you certainly can’t scare me!” Finnick exclaimed.
“Really, Finnick? We’ll see,” Monty said.
“Maybe you will be the one who gets scared,” Specs chimed in.
“No way. This is my Halloween party. What could go wrong and scare me? Don’t count on it guys,” Monty scoffed.
The video game characters left the clubroom and returned to their games.
Afterwards, Monty returned to his game excitedly, ready for the day he could finally create a scary Halloween party.
Little did he know that on the day of Halloween, not only would he see scary things, but something would change his life forever.
Chapter 2
Monty got ready for players as the arcade opened on the day of Halloween. However, as the day went by, he realized that Mr. Craven was behaving rather strangely. Every time a player asked Mr. Craven for help, he never spoke, but just pointed. This confused both the players and Monty.
Nevertheless, as soon as night came and the arcade closed, Monty got everything he needed for the Halloween party ready. His assistant, Abigail, had also helped him set up everything he needed.
After the decorations were completed, he waited until 9:30, but for some unknown reason, nobody came.
“Where is everyone?” he asked Abigail.
“I’m not sure. I’m sure they’ll show up soon,” Abigail replied.
Soon it was almost 10:00, and still nobody had shown up. He was about to go to the clubroom to look for his friends when Bugsy suddenly appeared at his door.
“Monty, you have to come quick!” Bugsy said.
“What? Why? Shouldn’t you and the others be on your way to my party?” Monty asked.
“Well, yeah. But you’ve just got to take a look at this!” Bugsy said as he ran towards the power cable leading to the wall.
Monty followed him and the two entered the wall. Here there were travel tubes leading to every video game in the arcade.
“So, what’s going on?” Monty asked.
“Wait and you’ll see,” Bugsy said. He then led him to one of the furthest travel tubes.
Before Monty could enter the game, Bugsy stopped him.
“What now?” Monty asked impatiently.
“First, put on your magician blindfold,” Bugsy instructed.
“Why?” Monty asked.
“Just do it, will ya?” Bugsy replied.
Monty rolled his eyes as he reached into his suit and pulled out his handkerchief. He tied it around his head to cover his eyes.
