《愛在黎明破曉時》
1.
席琳：你愛過人嗎？
傑西：有。好了，下一個問題。妳覺得妳的——
席琳：等等。我們可以只用一個字來回答？
傑西：為什麼不行？
席琳：在我把自己頭一次性幻想說得那麼仔細之後？
傑西：這根本是兩回事。我可以詳細告訴妳我的性幻想，那沒什麼。那要是我問妳感情的事呢？

CELINE

JESSE
Yes. Okay, next question. What do you think is your—
CELINE
Wait a minute. We can give one -word answers
JESSE
Why not?
CELINE
After I went into such detail about my first sexual feelings?
JESSE
But there’s a big difference between those two things. I could tell you all about my first sexual feelings, no big deal. What if I had asked you about love?
CELINE
I would have lied, but at least I would’ve made a great story.
JESSE
See. The whole concept of love is much more complex. Love’s like God or something: It’s everywhere... I see it, I feel it, but I don’t know if another person is going to hand it to me.

JESSE
Then I propose we jump in time to that moment when we would naturally do that—probably a couple of hours from now after a certain amount of awkwardness and stuff—and bring that moment back to here and now, given these ideal surroundings. It’ll be a great way to remember not only our first kiss, but this great sunset, the Ferris wheel, Vienna...
CELINE walks over to him and puts her arms around his neck.
CELINE
How come every time you want me to do something, you start talking about time travel?
JESSE
Okay, I think we should kiss right now.

CELINE
He convinced me, but I think I was ready after only talking to him a short while. He was so sweet. We were in the lounge car and he began to talk about him as a little boy seeing his great-grandmother’s ghost. I think that’s when I fell for him—just the idea of this little boy, full of beautiful dreams. He trapped me.
And he’s so cute. He has really beautiful blue eyes, nice pink lips, and greasy hair. He’s kinda tall and a little clumsy. I like to feel his eyes on me when I look away. And he kind of kisses like an adolescent. It’s so cute.

傑西：我可以直接回去，但就是沒辦法，我想多混一會兒。我想逃跑，但不是回家。我不想見到熟人，不想說話，只想當個沒人認識的遊魂。

JESSE
I could have come right back, but I just couldn’t I think I wanted to just wallow for a while. I wanted to run, but not home. I didn’t want to see anyone I knew. I didn’t want to talk. I wanted to be ghost, completely anonymous.
I’m great... rapturous. I’m a real person again. I’ll tell you why. It’s my last night in Europe and I’ve met someone very special. You know how they say we are each other’s angels and demons? Well, she was literally this Botticelli angel, waiting for me at the gate back to life.

傑西：後來坐在她附近的一對怪夫妻吵了起來，她就往後面走，正好坐在我走道對面的座位上。我們開始聊天。我想她起先並不怎麼喜歡我。她很聰明、熱情，長得又美——我突然對自己一點信心也沒有，覺得自己說的每句話都很蠢，很沙豬。
席琳：噢，老兄，要是我就不擔心。我確定她沒在心裡評斷你啦。對了，她都決定坐在你旁邊啦。我確定她是故意這樣的。我們男人最笨了，永遠都搞不懂女人。以我對她們的那一點點認識來說，她們的行為一直滿怪的。
JESSE
Then later, there was this weirdo couple fighting near her, and she moved back and happened to sit right across the aisle from me. We began to talk. I don’t think she really liked me at the beginning. She is so smart and passionate and beautiful—I felt o unsure of myself. I felt everything I was saying was stupid macho stuff.
CELINE
Oh, man, I wouldn’t worry. I’m sure she was not judging you. And by the way, she decided to sit next to you. I’m sure she did it on purpose. Us men are stupid. We never understand women. They act strange, the little I know of them.

傑西：我覺得我們好像走在夢中世界一樣。
席琳：好怪喔。就像我們在一起的時間只屬於我們──是我們自己創造出來的東西。就好像，我在你的夢裡，你在我的夢裡。
傑西：是啊，我們今天晚上所做的一切原本都不該發生。
席琳：也許那就是這件事感覺那麼超現實的原因。
不過呢，等早上一到，我們就會變成南瓜。
傑西：哎，我不想談明天早上。
席琳：可是到了這個階段，我想你應該拿出玻璃鞋，看看合不合我的腳了。
JESSE
I feel like this is some dream world we’re walking through.
CELINE
It’s so weird. It’s like our time together is just ours—it’s our own creation. It’s like, I’m in your dream and you’re in mine.
JESSE
Yeah, what we’re doing this whole night shouldn’t officially be happening.
CELINE
Maybe that’s why this feels so otherworldly. But then, the morning comes and we turn into pumpkins. JESSE Ahh. I don’t want to talk about the morning.
CELINE
But at this point I think you’re supposed to produce the glass slipper and see if it fits.

席琳：你不想再見到我了嗎？
傑西：不是，我當然想再見到妳。我是說，媽的，如果現在要我選擇和妳結婚或再也見不到妳，我一定會娶妳。我是說，也許這只是甜言蜜語，但很多夫妻連甜言蜜語都沒有就結婚了，所以我想我們不會比別人差。妳想和我做愛嗎？

CELINE
Well, actually I already decided to sleep with you when I got off the train. Now that we’ve talked so much I don’t know anymore. Why do I make everything so complicated?
JESSE
I don’t know.

傑西只是笑笑地看著她，接著又緩緩抬頭仰望天空。
CELINE
When you talked earlier about after a few years how a couple would begin to hate each other by anticipating their reactions or getting tired of their mannerisms, I think it would be the opposite with me. I think I can fall in love when I know everything about him—how he’s going to part his hair, or what shirt he’s going to wear that day, knowing the exact story he would tell in a given situation. I’m sure that’s when I’d know I’m really in love.
JESSE just smiles, looks at her, and then slowly looks back up at the sky.

傑西：剛才在書店看到妳，我想我差點克制不住自己。妳怎麼會知道我在這裡？

I thought I was going to totally lose it in there after I saw you. How’d you even know I was going to be here?
CELINE
It’s my favorite bookstore in Paris. You can sit down for hours. I love it—even if there’s fleas.
JESSE
I think a cat slept on my head last night.
CELINE
I saw your picture on the calendar about a month ago and that you were going to be here. It’s funny, I read an article on your
book, and it sounded vaguely familiar, but I didn’t put it all together until I saw the photo.

Remember the reason we did that... We were both afraid if we started calling and writing it would slowly fade away.
CELINE
It definitely wasn’t slow fade.
JESSE
Sure wasn’t.
CELINE
Yes, we wanted to pick it up where we left off, which would have been a good idea if—
JESSE
If it’d just worked! Oh well.

席琳：算了。不是什麼壞事啦，也許是因為讀了你的書吧。想到我那個夏天和秋天是那麼充滿希望，從那之後，就有點……我不知道。要是你不用面對過去，回憶會是很美妙的。
傑西：我可以用妳這句話做成標語貼紙嗎？不用面對過去，回憶會是很美妙的。妳寫書回憶那一晚的話，可以用這個當書名。
席琳：嗯，我想寫出來的書會很不一樣。
傑西：裡面不會有性愛場面。
CELINE
Forget it. Nothing bad, reading your book maybe. Thinking of how hopeful I was that summer and fall, and since then it’s kind of... I don’t know. Memory is a wonderful thing if you don’t have to deal with the past.
JESSE
Can I make a bumper sticker out of that? MEMORY IS A WONDERFUL THING IF YOU DON’T HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE PAST. If you wrote a book about our night, that could be the title.
CELINE
Yes, I guess it would have been a different book.
JESSE
It wouldn’t have a sex scene.

席琳：你知道嗎，就像我記得你的鬍子帶點紅色，那天你離開以前，早晨的陽光讓它微微發亮。我想念那個。哎，我真的瘋了。

JESSE
Now I know for sure why I wrote that stupid book—so you might actually show up at a reading in Paris and I’d walk over to you and ask, “Hey, where the fuck were you?”
CELINE
Honestly, did you think I’d be here today?
JESSE
I’m not kidding—I think I wrote it to try and find you somehow.
CELINE
I know it’s not true, but that is sweet to say.
JESSE
I think it is true. What did you think the chances were of us seeing each other again?

realize it only happens a few times.

JESSE
Do you really believe that? That everything is fated in some way?

CELINE

about you anymore. It’s about that time, that moment in time that is forever gone.
JESSE
You say all this stuff, but you didn’t even remember having sex.
CELINE
Of course I remembered.
JESSE
You did?
CELINE
Girls pretend things like that. What was I supposed to say—I remember the wine in the park, looking up at the stars fading while the sun came up? We had sex twice, you idiot.
JESSE
You know what? I’m just so happy to see you, even if you’ve become an angry manic-depressive activist. I still like you and enjoy being around you.
7.
席琳：我想在這裡測試一件事。

She moves over to JESSE and gives him a big, long hug.
CELINE
I’m seeing if you are going to dissolve into molecules or if you stay together.
JESSE is almost shaking.
JESSE
How am I doing?
CELINE
Still here.
JESSE
Good. I’m liking still being here.
