All aboard the Railway History Express!
Songs, stories, and films have been written about it. It has transported millions of people and played a key role in the development of many countries around the world. It is, of course, the railroad. So, all aboard, and let’s take a ride through the past, present, and future of the railroad.
Early forms of the railroad consisted of basic tracks and a vehicle pulled by animals or even people. Trains really picked up speed, however, with the arrival of the steam locomotive in 1804. Thanks to steam power, trains could move people and goods quickly and reliably over great distances. It is no surprise that over the next century, railroads began to crisscross the United Kingdom, the United States, and other nations.
In the years that followed, new railroad tracks were laid across countries and continents, and the trains themselves continued to improve. Private luxury cars, for one, made train travel more comfortable and stylish. Now, we have high-speed railways that can go over 400 kilometers per hour. With air travel getting more expensive and trains getting faster, the future may see railways rise to the top as the preferred mode of transportation.
