An Interview with Financial Writer Shi Shenghui
Many young professionals today view financial management and investments as a murky, high risk endeavor which can leave you cash strapped. Financial writer Shi Shenghui, however, believes that financial investments are nothing to be afraid of, even for those earning NT 30K/month. He states that at this salary one can save 6K per month and put it towards sound investments. By dividing food, clothing, and entertainment into a balanced budget, even 30K earners can give themselves a financial cushion. The author stipulates that meals should not cost more than NT100 (leaving NT 6000 for food a month). Clothing should be budgeted at NT 36,000 per year. Clothes, Shi Shenghui continues, should be bought all at once during discounts season. "Year-end, salary increase or bonuses should be put aside for a rainy day," says Shi.
After saving NT1 million, Shi Shenghui encourages young professionals to buy a home. "The first house is the most important. You don't have to worry about the location. The first house is to be lived in. The second house is an investment. Housing is an important financial component; when you’re old you don’t want to be searching for a place to stay. A sense of security in life is of the utmost importance." While Shi has already reaped the benefits of financial management, he still keeps young professionals in mind. "Work is for eating today, an investment is a meal for a later day,” he states. “With good financial management and stability there is more time to deal with academic ambitions, as well as family and work issues. There is even time to realize dreams!"
With 15 years of experience in the securities industry, Shi Shenghui published his first book "Buy One Stock, Earn Over 18%", in 2012. The book earned both critical acclaim and a big readership. Shi Shenghui has however rejected the notion of being a financial guru. He has since published several books on finances, passing on simple investment methods and advice as opposed to complex and difficult financial theory. His books are described by readers as "consistent with real life, ensuring that you can understand how to manage finances.”
"By managing money, we can improve our quality of life, but we shouldn’t jump ahead of ourselves and buy into the notion of total financial freedom," says Shi. After some thought, Shi related financial management with life, saying "In today's society, everyone can live to be 100. This longevity of life can be a blessing to those who are financially prepared and a curse to those who aren’t." We need stability when entering old age, not financial troubles. So, in addition to hard work, we all need some investments in our back pocket.
