Hard Times, first published in 1854, grew out of Charles Dickens's passionate concern for the weak and exploited. In the mid-nineteenth century manufacturing town of Coketown factory life was harsh and monotonous. This is shown to be the result not only of greed and materialism but also of a Utilitarian philosophy more concerned with facts and statistics than with human beings and their feelings. Through his vivid creation of characters like the bullying Mr Bounderby, the spiteful Mrs Sparsit, and the fact-worshipping Mr Gradgrind, Dickens poeple Coketown with a fascinating and memorable variety of characters. It is a compelling story, written with all of Dickens's command of humour, description and witty satire.
