▍早起的鳥兒
我在距我所住的鎮上約十公里的一所鄉間學校教書。那裡有許多不方便的，如買不到文具簿冊、家事材料等等。學生們大多在開學前買齊，或利用例假日乘車到鎮上買。有些和我比較親近的學生，便託我代買。我常常變成她們的義務採買。
學生託我代買東西，通常我總是在當天回家便買好，次日帶去，從不負她們所託。但是，有一次我卻忙忘了，受託那晚我沒去買，直到次日清晨要上班時才想起來。
那是一個學生要我幫她買三捲淺黃色的北京紙。鎮上有三、四家材料店，我原以為一上街很容易就可買到的，沒想到卻沒有買到。
我最先到我平日常去的那家，結果是關著門；再到鎮上最大的一家，也關著門；然後再到另一家，結果還是一樣：關著門。我正想是否硬給敲開門時，突然想起還有一家，乃抱著姑且一試的心裡前去，沒想到竟然在這我最不常去的一家買到了。全鎮就只有這一家材料店主人已起身，開了門做生意。
由於這緣故，我對這家材料店的印象丕變；我也決定，自此以後，都找這一家。
我在往學校的路上，一直在心中玩索著西洋這一句諺語：「早起的鳥兒有蟲吃。」
是呀！這句話，果然蘊有無盡的深意。
▍The early bird
I teach in a countryside school far from my town about ten kilometers. There are many inconveniences, for instance, can’t buy writing materials and books, materials of housekeeping etc. The students almost buy all of them before school beginning, or take the bus to town to buy them on holiday. Someone who is on intimate terms with me often ask me to buy. I frequently am their duty buyer.
I often buy the things the same day when they asked me to buy, and bring for them in order not to break the promise. However, there is one time I forgot it, not buy it I promised that night, think it of till next morning I want to go to work.
They are three rolls of the yellow Peking paper which the students asked me to buy. Three or four shops are on the town, I think originally it’s easy to buy them as I go to the street, but it unexpectedly I haven’t bought them.
I went to the shop I often used to buy first, but its door is closed; I go to the biggest one again, it’s closed also; then I go to another shop, the result is the same: door closed. I suddenly think of there is a shop still while I guess to knock the door hard and fast, I go there just to make a try, unexpectedly I bought them at that shop I scarcely buy. It’s the only material shop in the town which opens the door to sell.
Due to this reason, my impression about this shop has a great change; I also decided from now on, I will go to this shop to buy.
On the way to school, I ponder a proverb of the West: “The early bird catches the worm.”
Yes. It really contains profound meaning limitlessly.
▍晚霞花園
一抬眼，只見一座晚霞花園輕懸在西方天邊，燦爛輝煌，明麗閃亮，如幻似真……
園裡錯列著各種形狀的花圃，有圓形的，橢圓形的，半圓形的，正方形的，長方形的，菱形的，三角形的，還有不規則形的，雜然紛陳，一一羅列……
花有盛開的，有半開的，有微開的，有含苞未開的，花朵、花苞、花蕾，交相錯雜，襯以綠葉……
花色紛繁多彩，多種多樣，紅、黃、白、紫、藍、靛以及許多種顏色在同一朵花上的……
是玫瑰。是香蘭。是荷。是菊。是紫薇。是榴花。是向日葵。……
蜜蜂飛來了，蝴蝶飛來了，飛蛾也飛來了。牠們翩翩飛翔著，穿行在群花間，悠遊來去，怡然自得，採著蜜，傳播著花粉……。
當然，也有人穿行在花間。那個是園丁吧！看！他噴水澆花，又除著雜草呢！那些是賞花人吧！他們行走在花圃間的走道上，從一個花圃到另一個花圃，停停走走，走走停停，指指點點，時而彎下腰，伸手去牽扶起花兒來細瞧，來嗅聞，來品味……
這，不用說，是造物者手握夕陽這隻彩筆在雲上創作的畫了。祂揮灑著。祂繪畫著。祂付出了所有的心血，乃有了這一座晚霞花園輕懸在西方天邊，來愉悅我……
▍The Afterglow Garden
Raise my head, I just view there is an afterglow garden hangs slightly on western azure, brilliant and splendid, bright and radiate, as dream as illusory…
There jumbled the flower nursery of many shapes, that is, the round, the ellipse, the semicircle, the square, the rectangular, the rhomb, the triangle, and the irregular, appear miscellaneously, included within one by one…
The flowers are fully blossom, half blossom, slight open, be in bud, the flower, the bud, the flower bud, mix together, set off the green leaves…
Numerous and complicated the flower colour, multicoloured, there are red, yellow, white, purple, blue, indigo-blue and many kinds of colour on a flower…
May it be the rose . May it be the orchid. May it be the lotus. May it be the chrysanthemum. May it be the crape myrtle. May it be the sunflower…
The honey bee comes. The butterfly comes. The moth comes. They flutter, shuttle among the flowers, leisurely, fell happy and contented, gather nectar, disseminate pollen…
Of course, there is someone shuttle among them. May he’s the gardener. Lo! He waters the flower, and also he weeds. And these are the men appreciate the flower. They walk on the path among the flower nurseries. From one flower nursery to another flower nursery, they now walk now stop, now stop now walk, point and dot, sometimes bow their waists and stretch their hands to hold the flowers to peer them carefully, to smell them, to appreciate them…
Wordlessly, this is the picture created by the Creator who grasps the coloured pen of the setting sun in his hands. He wields. He paints. He offered all his painstaking care, then there has this afterglow garden hangs slightly on western azure, to make me so jubilation…

▍水琴（代序）
有一條小河，從我小的時候流來，輕輕緩緩地，流成了一架水琴，一直在我的心靈深處。
河的兩岸有許多水草和岩石等。它們便是造物者創設的萬千琴弦。河水是彈琴的手指 ，尖細而修長，日夜不停地調撥著琴弦，靈活而熟練。
多像一名少女在彈琴！她把所有的深情凝聚在指尖，傾注到琴弦上，再由琴弦化為一 隻隻彩蝶，裊裊飛昇，飛向她夢中的白馬王子。
那是小提琴？抑或是七弦琴？琵琶？胡琴？或者鋼琴？……
是一曲小夜曲？抑或是詠嘆調？抒情詩？宋詞？元曲？……
一曲接著一曲。那是造物者嘔心瀝血的創作曲。
琴音輕緩而柔和，悠長而纖細，深情款款，千迴百折，縈縈不絕，久久不散……。
它們是一朵朵星花，濺滿小河兩岸，閃爍著星星點點的光芒……。
它們輕揚起一片喜悅、和樂，驅去所有的不快、憂愁……。
潺潺、淙淙、琮琮、叮叮、噹噹……那是水琴在彈奏，輕輕緩緩地，柔柔和和地，從 我小的時候開始，一直在我的心靈深處……。
▍The water lyre (In Lieu of Preface)
There is a river, flows from my childhood, slightly, slowly, flows into a water lyre, deep in my heart.
There are many water weeds and stones on the banks of the river. There are million of strings created by the Creator. The river water is the fingers of the lyre, keen and long, plays the strings day and night ceaselessly, nimble and skilled.
How does it like a girl play the lyre! She holds her deep emo-tion with concentrated attention on her finger points, pours to the strings, turn into colourfull butterflies one by one, raising curl upwards, flies to her prince charming in her dream.
Is it the violin? The seven-stringed plucked instrument? The Pipa? The huqin? Or the piano?…
Is it the serenade? Or the aria? The lyric poetry? The Sang Ci? The Yuan Qu?…
One melody follows one melody. It’s the created melody by the Creator strains his mind.
Slightly, slowly, and soft, long and exquisite, deep emotion in great earnest, kilo wind and hundred curl, linger and linger ceaselessly, don’t disperse for long…
They are a flower and a flower, spatter fully on the river back, sparkle rays of light a bit and a bit…
They raise slightly roll of joyousness, gentle and pleasant, drive away whole the unhappy and worry…
Gurgling, murmuring, bubbling, ding-ding, dong-dong…it’s the water lyre playing, slightly, slowly, soft and soft, comes from my childhood, within my deep heart still…
