Book Recommendation 專文推薦
Dear Reader:
As the English editor of this book, it is my pleasure to offer my thoughts and recommendations regarding this publication. With roughly 20,000 words, this book is an excellent resource for building your vocabulary in English. One of its major strong points is the arrangement of vocabulary into specific, useful categories.
It’s well known that organizing words into meaningful patterns greatly assists in memorization, retention and recall. To this end, there are 22 chapters full of words related to various themes. For example, you’ll find chapters on individual physical and personality characteristics, society, culture, food and drink, occupations, the economy and other business-related matters as well as much, much more. Another definite strength of this publication is the abundant number of synonyms and other closely related words provided for each of the main vocabulary listed. This gives learners more choices so that they aren’t restricted to certain set patterns of speaking that often limit ESL students.
The vocabulary itself in this book is a good mixture from different levels, with an emphasis on intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced vocabulary. In addition, you’ll notice some words are identified as being related to the GRE, which is useful if you plan to study for that particular exam. When looking through the book, you’ll notice some words are specific to a particular area (for example, medicine or science) that might not interest you at this time.
Obviously, if you encounter a word or category that you feel you may have no need of learning now, you shouldn’t feel obligated to study it. This book is best used keeping in mind your own individual needs and what your purposes are for learning English. Feel free to skip a chapter here and there for now until you feel the need to look at it later. That way, you can better concentrate on what you require immediately.
The main thing is not that you go through this publication in any particular order. Rather, the most important point to remember is to set aside some time regularly to build your vocabulary. Also, and I can’t stress this enough, it’s essential to review the words you learn time and time again - only that way will you see definite progress.
Finally, I wish you the best of luck on your English-learning journey. It’s a worthwhile trip.
