Veteran NBA Star Shaquille O’Neal Talks Basketball, Business and His Legacy
ANNA COREN, “TALK ASIA”
To say that Shaquille O’Neal is a force is an understatement. Standing over seven feet tall, there is a dominance that surrounds him. Easily billed as one of the most recognizable NBA players, his basketball career was record-setting. Signed to [the] Orlando Magic at 20 years of age, the larger-than-life center was named Rookie of the Year and led them to their first-ever NBA final. From there, Shaq made his way to Los Angeles . . .
JERRY WEST, FMR. GENERAL MANAGER, LOS ANGELES LAKERS
The response from bringing Shaquille O’Neal to the Los Angeles Lakers has been one that has been [unprecedented] in our history.
ANNA COREN, “TALK ASIA”
. . . signing what was the biggest contract in NBA history with the L.A. Lakers. After three championships, an Olympic gold medal and [a] highly publicized feud, O’Neal went on to play for several other teams before an injury forced him to retire after 19 seasons.
SHAQUILLE O’NEAL, NBA STAR
That’s why I’m telling you first—I’m about to retire. Love ya. Talk to you soon.
ANNA COREN, “TALK ASIA”
But off court, he’s most definitely still scoring. Trading in his jersey for the boardroom, Shaquille O’Neal is hard to miss these days. He’s an actor, a sports analyst, a designer, an entrepreneur and has a doctorate in education.
Was it always basketball for you, Shaq, as a kid, or were there other options? Baseball? Football?
SHAQUILLE O’NEAL, NBA STAR
No, actually football was my favorite sport. I love football. I love football, really never liked to play basketball. I just used to play basketball because my father was a coach, and it was just something to do. I was really excellent at football, baseball and basketball.
ANNA COREN, “TALK ASIA”
You were drafted by [the] Orlando Magic, won Rookie of the Year. After four years with [the] Magic, you then signed with [the] L.A. Lakers for what was the biggest contract at the time in NBA history—[$]120 million for seven years. You talk about the money, you know, that other players were getting. When you were given that contract, did you think, “I’ve made it?”
SHAQUILLE O’NEAL, NBA STAR
Yes and no. When I received the big contract, yes I’ve made it, but now you have to continue to make it. Especially when you receive that type of money, [there is] truly no room for error. You gotta win championships. You gotta entertain people. And you gotta do the right thing. So, the first year I got the 20 million, I spent that in about two weeks. But it was . . . there’s a lot of pressure. And again, fear propelled me to greatness. Jerry West brought me in the arena, made me look up. Magic Johnson, Kareem, Goodrich, all the great Lakers. He says to me, “Your name could be up there one day or this could be the biggest mistake in Laker history.”
ANNA COREN, “TALK ASIA”
And you want to prove them wrong.
SHAQUILLE O’NEAL, NBA STAR
Yeah. I remember one time I called my father, [and] I said, “The pressure’s getting to me.” And he was a drill sergeant, so he yelled. He said, “What did you say to me, chump? Pressure is when you don’t know where your next meal is coming from.” And crazy, like, as he was telling me that, I’m driving by and I’m looking at a homeless guy just sitting there with a shopping cart and bags. I’m like, you know what, that is pressure. I’ve got a $5 million house. I don’t have any pressure.
ANNA COREN, “TALK ASIA”
Although you are no longer playing, you are as busy as ever building the Shaq brand. Do you enjoy being a businessman and an entrepreneur?
SHAQUILLE O’NEAL, NBA STAR
Yes, I enjoy it. When I was 18 years old coming from LSU, [I] went to a Los Angeles Laker game and met Magic Johnson. And Magic Johnson tells me, it’s OK to be famous, but you want to start owning things. At the time being an 18-year-old fresh out of college, [I] had no idea what he was talking about, but, you know, as the years went on you see that 85 percent of professional athletes when they’re done playing have nothing. I didn’t want to be part of that stat, so I decided to, you know, start the Shaq brand at an early age and, you know, continue to work it. And luckily, even after being retired five years, you know, the Shaq brand is still going.
ANNA COREN, “TALK ASIA”
But Shaq, I would think that someone like you could easily retire with all your wealth.
SHAQUILLE O’NEAL, NBA STAR
Of course, I can.
ANNA COREN, “TALK ASIA”
Sit back, just enjoy. So, what is driving you still?
SHAQUILLE O’NEAL, NBA STAR
I just like to maximize my potential. I love partnerships. I love helping brands grow. I love meeting people. I love having fun.
